Waste Audit Will Identify Existing Waste Patterns and Composition, and Make Recommendations for Collection and Sorting Programs
Sharjah, UAE, Oct 1/2006/ -- Tactical Connections, an international business development and consulting firm that specializes in helping companies expand into the Middle East, Western Europe and North Africa, today announced the kick-off of a city-wide audit of Sharjah Municipality’s industrial, commercial, residential and governmental waste. The audit is part of the contract Tactical signed with the Sharjah Municipality in July to provide them with strategic, technical and process consulting to help the Emirate address its municipal waste collection and recycling models, and help the Emirate become a leader in the “Green” environmental movement in the region. The audit is expected to be completed in March 2007.
Over the last several months, Tactical Connections has worked closely with the Sharjah Municipality and the Ruler’s Office to build the audit plan. This work included the GIS mapping of all waste collection bins and the analysis of collection patterns and practices by sector. At the same time, municipal bylaws were reviewed and compared to international standards for the purpose of developing new bylaws and programs as part of Sharjah’s environmental initiative policy.
“We have a five member team on the ground in Sharjah who will be running the audit, with the support of the Municipality and the Ruler’s Office,” said Samer Kamal, Senior Partner at Tactical Connections. “Our goal will be to sample audit approximately 2,000 kg of municipal waste each day, from all sectors of the city, to identify densities, compositions, collection patterns and other critical factors that will help us in making recycling recommendations to the municipality.”
Each year, Sharjah generates an average of 1,250 kg of waste per person as compared to approximately 400 kg of waste per person in Canada and 900 kg of waste per person in the United States. With a population of over 800,000 residents, and a growth rate of 13% each year, Sharjah sends approximately 1 million tonnes of waste to landfill each year.
“Conducting a waste audit is very important to help us identify problem areas in the collection and waste streams of Sharjah, and to allow us to inform the municipality on best practices and recycling initiatives for diverting 55% to 60% of waste from their landfills,” stated Brad Kerr, Senior Partner at Tactical Connections. “Sharjah’s landfills are rapidly filling up and recycling solutions are the most economically and environmentally feasible method to managing this problem.”
The results of the waste audit will be used to make recommendations to the Sharjah Municipality for implementing a world-class waste handling and recycling facility, to reduce waste disposal costs by lowering the amount of waste going to the landfills, to develop programs for sanitation and safety, and for new collection methods, bylaws and landfill management programs.
