Tactical Helps Sharjah, UAE Go Green With Largest Recycling Facility in the World

Bee’ah: Sharjah’s Answer to the Environment
Largest recycling plant in the world set in motion

Sharjah, UAE, Dec 12, 2006/ -- Sharjah produces a total of 1.1 million tons of waste per year, which continues to increase at an alarming rate of 13% annually.

Sharjah Municipality brings a timely solution in the form of Bee’ah, a company set to tackle Sharjah’s growing environmental problems. The company, set to be the first integrated environmental management company in the Middle East and the largest in the Arab countries, was launched as the brainchild of His Highness Dr. Sultan Bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Ruler of Sharjah, in an effort to create a healthy environment for the entire community and the region.

Bee’ah is a limited liability company (LLC) and exists as a joint venture between Sharjah Municipality, JMS Property Development and Tactical Connections, Canada. Bee'ah will provide practical solutions for effective waste management, thus reducing the stress on existing landfill sites.

The Bee'ah recycling facility will begin operating by the beginning of 2008 and will be built based on the latest technical standards, and managed by the best engineers, specialists and experts of the recycling industry.

His Highness has made the commitment to solve the city’s waste and pollution problems. He stated, “The government is working day after day to find the necessary solution to protect the society’s natural resources for the benefit of the present and future generations. Bee'ah exists to invest in the environment and to assure continuity of the well-being of our society without exhausting and corrupting our resources.”

As part of the project’s first phase, Bee'ah will be managing the collection of waste and sorting out recyclable materials by categories like aluminum, plastic, newsprint, cardboard, paper, glass, ceramic, construction materials, steel and organics. The materials will then be sent to the various facilities where they will be effectively recycled.

His Highness stressed that one of the key projects is the sorting and recycling of waste in the most efficient way, which will contribute towards generating revenue and ensuring the protection of the environment. He said, “While the programme will take the initial steps to recycle waste materials, the strength of the programme lies in its ability to create a more environmentally aware community. To ensure this, the project will be supported by educational and promotional campaigns to enlighten the community on their vital role in caring for their environment.”

During the launch of Bee'ah, His Excellency Salem Bin Mohammed Al Owais, Chairman of the Sharjah Municipal Council said, “His Highness aims to improve the quality of Sharjah Municipality’s recycling programmes by adapting the best international standards in order to protect the environment and to create a pollution-free Sharjah.”

His Excellency Al Owais added, “Under the wise leadership and guidance of the ruler, we are the first to find proactive solutions to keep the environment safe. Thanks to him, we have also learned that our responsibility towards the world should start within the community. And this is why Bee'ah is the realization of a dream to develop a safe and healthy Sharjah and to generate profit from the final product of these recycled materials.”

Bee'ah will provide more efficient methods for sorting and recycling residential, industrial, agricultural, electronic and building material waste. It will also deal with other environmental waste, eliminating harmful pollution that pose a major threat to the natural balance of the environment. Recycling will take place in the company’s Al Sajaa facility, which will be equipped with the latest technology and directed by expert technicians and professionals from the recycling industry.

Taking this dynamic project to the next level and promoting the importance of environmental awareness, Bee'ah will also build a museum with various recycling and environment related displays, which will play a large role in educating the masses of the importance of protecting the environment. Bee'ah also plans to expand by building branches in other parts of the Emirate of Sharjah.

Mr. Al Owais added that the launch of Bee'ah is part of His Highness Dr. Sultan Bin Mohammed Al Qasimi’s continuous effort to develop Sharjah. He said, “As the city already known as the capital of culture and education, every attempt will be made to transform Sharjah into a city free of pollution. The city will be transformed into a place where residents and visitors can benefit from a clean and healthy environment.”

His excellency Engineer Abdulla Al Ameri, Director General of Sharjah Municipality stated that the foundation of the company comes under the effort of the ruler’s mission to protect Sharjah’s precious environment. Mr. Al Ameri also said, “With an annual waste production estimated at 1,250 kg per person, Bee'ah will certainly be the practical solution to reduce the volume of waste, considering that 55 to 65% of waste is recyclable.”

According to Mr. Samer Kamal, Tactical Connections Senior Partner and Project Consultant, the project is an exciting development that will dramatically improve Sharjah’s environment record. He said, “Sharjah has been fortunate to have the full support of the government in developing Bee'ah. Our goal is to make Sharjah a green Emirate that will be the benchmark for other states in the region.”
